    Plein-air paintings are small sketches made outdoors to capture the essence of a scene so they can be used as a reference for larger studio paintings. The plein-air studies are more painterly and leave out many details in order to record an impression quickly. Outdoor painters face a few extra challenges, such as changing light, moving objects, unpredictable weather and last but not least: bugs! All those factors give these 'memories of the moment' a fresh and exciting appeal.
