Originally, Carole Peirson viewed art as essentially a commercial occupation. Her degree in Design & Communication in 1996 at the Ichthus Polytechnic in Rotterdam, started her off as a graphic artist. However, her greatest pleasure and fulfillment came from creating impressions of things that fascinated and inspired her personally, non-commercial artworks that captivate the viewer. Art had at first been primarily the nuts and bolts of a fast-paced job at an advertising agency in her native Holland. Then, in the summer of 2000, she moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The initial culture-shock of moving from a crowded Dutch city to rural America changed not only her life, but her view of life itself. When she saw the beauty of nature around her, she knew she could never go back. Studying oil painting with Joe Adams (Adamo), a well known and respected painter in Painter, Virginia, has lifted her work to a new creative and technical level. The technique of ‘glazing’ (transparent layers of oil paint on top of a monochrome underpainting) gives her paintings a three-dimensional look and together with a detailed ‘handwriting’ she tries to capture the natural beauty of still lifes, flowers, landscapes and animals. In 2007, Carole started painting 'en plein-air' (outdoors) in combination with her studio work. She realized mastering plein-air painting is crucial to becoming a better studio painter since a camera does not capture the light and colors in nature accurately. Classical painters in the past would make small sketches outdoors to capture the essence of a scene and would then return to the studio to create a larger painting using the more labor intensive glazing technique. The plein-air sketches are more painterly and leave out unnecessary details in order to record an impression quickly. These 'memories of the moment' have a fresh and exciting appeal. Carole took plein-air painting workshops in 2007 with renowned artists Tracey Frugoli and Roger Dale Brown and in 2008 with Bethanne Kinsella Cople and Gavin Brooks. Today, she continues to broaden her artistic horizon by taking lessons with other artists, such as a portrait and figure workshop with Scott Powers in 2009. Carole is a member of the Eastern Shore Art League (ESAL), Tidewater Art Alliance (TAA), the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association (MAPAPA), Associate member of Oil Painters of America (OPA) and the Arts Committee of the Eastern Shore Tourism Alliance. |
